The Fire Code governs the manufacture, storage, handling, use and transportation of hazardous materials and combustible materials, including the design, installation, operation and maintenance of facilities containing such materials; the design, installation, operation and maintenance of fire extinguishing systems and fire alarm systems; emergency preparedness and planning, including fire safety plans, emergency action plans, and places of public gathering; fire operations features, including building identification, fire apparatus access and rooftop access and obstructions; and other fire safety requirements.

The Fire Code is a companion code to the New York Construction Codes, with extensive cross-references to the Building and Mechanical Codes.  It is essential that all design professionals, building owners and managers, and others engaged in trades and businesses utilizing materials or operating and maintaining equipment and facilities regulated by the Fire Code, understand the relationship between these codes and become familiar with Fire Code requirements, to ensure that buildings or facilities for which they are responsible are lawfully designed, operated and maintained.

This new Fire Code, codified in Title 29 of the New York City Administrative Code, took effect on July 1, 2008.
