These designs were created by Jacob Wrey Mould, one of the three original architects of Central Park, for encaustic tiles to be used for a horse drinking fountain. Dated from 1867, the original designs were executed in pen and ink with watercolor washes.
The Department of Parks collections at the New York City Municipal Archives include the original plans for Central Park, one of the most important public works achievements of the 19th century. The collection consists of more than 1,500 drawings showing the design and construction of all aspects of the park between 1850 and 1880.
